Mixed Fortunes for Crews Overseas
Three crews nominated their optional overseas events over St. Patricks Weekend.
The Somerset crew of Martyn and Dawn England started their season with on a high on their first attempt at the West Cork Rally taking third in their class in their Fiesta R5.
Bridgend Motor Club members Tony Rees and Geraint Thomas took the Darrian GTR to the event based in Clonakilty. The crew had a respectable result but didn’t match their usual pace as they get used to switching from descriptive pace notes to the number system to describe the severity of bends.
After a promising start to their assault on the Clio R3T Trophy France, Sara Williams / Patrick Walsh were unfortunate not to finish the Rallye Le Touquet, based in the classy seaside resort near Calais. Mud pulled onto the road by a previous competitor caused a spin but the crew continued with only cosmetic damage to the car only for an electrical problem to crop up, ending their event. Sara, who has backing from MG dealership, Brecon Motors plans to contest as many rounds as possible.
Ten contenders head to Wiltshire to the World War II air base of Down Ampney in for Round 4, the Get it Sideways Stages organised by Cheltenham Motor Club. Top seeded driver amongst FMP Contenders is sure to be Chris Ransley who clinched overall victory at the venue last year and is co-driven by reigning FMP Junior Champion Chris Sharpe-Simkiss.
Two cars are entered from the Llanelli based T&M Group Rally Team. T&M Landscapes roprietor Mike Jewell hopes to overcome a parts supply issue to bring his Subaru Impreza with his co-driver not yet confirmed, and Kristian Wright / David Hodge use their Toyota Celica.
With a 1st and 3rd in class respectively earned on Round 1, Maesteg DMC’s Carl Fricker and Forresters CC member Theresa Fossey compete in a 1600 Nova. Maesteg DMC crew Stuart Jacobs / Matthew Russ also compete in the 1600 class in a Citroen Saxo.
