Reigning Champion Will Mains started the season at a blistering pace in his Vauxhall Nova 1400 partnered by Arfon Griffiths. They put on a giant killing act, taking 5th overall amongst far more powerful machinery, taking their class by almost 3 minutes.
Six of the Top Ten finishers were FMP registered crews and contenders took five class victories between them. Amman’s Mike ‘Jip’ Jewell had his best finish yet going into the final stage in second place behind Bob Fowden.
A gear linkage problem saw them lose time to Roger Thomas and Paul Wakely who despite a spin, (as per opening sequence of shots), clinched eventual second place.
A mechanical problem in Rogers BMW M3 late in the week saw him wheel out a worthy replacement, a Metro 6R4. Maesteg DMC member Carl Fricker missed out on a Top 10 finish by just two seconds but he and Theresa Fossey still took victory and maximum points in the 1600 class.
The Rali Cwm Gwendraeth which ran faultlessly all day was organised by Amman & District and Gwendraeth Valley Motor Clubs.
